For a long time Spain has had a monopoly on merchant maritime in the western part of the Mediterranean region as the port of Algeciras was the principal port for shipments and transhipments
between North America, Europe, West and North Africa and the Middle East.

The TangerMed port is changing that picture. This project, launched by His Majesty King Mohamed VI in 2002 has recently become the first Moroccan port to be certified ISO 9001 version 2000. This certification includes as a first step an area for the reception of ships, maintenance and services linked to the port. This was handled in a distinctive manner by the International organism Veritas and the service of The Moroccan Industrial Standards. The certification was the last step of an 18 month process by the Port authority of TangerMed in order to ensure a high quality management system. The process is going on to obtain the certification ISO 14001.

The port is planned to be at the same level with the 12 largest maritime ports in the world and the
largest port in the Mediterranean. With TangerMed, Morocco has made a quantitative as well as qualitative leap forward to a higher level of global connectivity. It has moved according to a Cnuced
rating from 78th position in 2004 to 33rd at present and in Africa it is second to South Africa.

With its strategic position situated at the strait s of Gibraltar, at the cross roads of important maritime routes, TangerMed is aiming for a market of approximately 600 million inhabitants including Europe , West and North Africa as well as North America and with this project, a network of road and railway system has been created connecting the North to the principal economic centers in the Kingdom.

Other derivatives of the project also include an offshore free zone where major industial companies are located adding to the creation of an important number of jobs.
